Splenomegaly on abdominal CT

On CT/US 13cm in length, 6 cm thick.

On abdominal film 16cm in craniocaudal dimension from inferior tip to diaphragm. Extra is given because cannot see superior tip.

Differential Diagnosis

Hyperplasia or Hypertrophy Related

  • Hereditary spherocytosis
  • Thalassemia
  • Immune hyperplasia (infectious mononucleosis, subacute bacterial endocarditis)
  • Immunologic diseases (immune thrombocytopenia, SLE, Felty's syndrome)

Passive Congestion (conditions that produce portal hypertension)

  • Cirrhosis
  • Budd-Chiari syndrome
  • Congestive heart failure
