Diffuse abnormality of small bowel in a hypoperfused (hypotensive) state, most often trauma.
- Dilated fluid filled loops
- Thickened walls
- Enhancement of mucosa
- IVC measuring < 9mm in AP diameter (measured at the level of renal veins)
- Relatively normal colon
Should be distinguised from diffuse small bowel edema accompanying central venous hypertension (aggresive resuscitation), small bowel ischemia secondary to vascualr occlusion and diffuse small bowel injury.
