Langerhans cell histiocytosis

aka Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH), histiocytosis X, eosinophilic granuloma
Chest
- Reticulonodular opacities in upper and middle lung zones
- Bizzare cysts with thick or thin walls
- Normal intervening lung
- Diffuse destructive disorder of distal airways caused by granulomas containing Langerhans cells
- Probably an allergic reaction to smoke
Musculoskeletal
- Proliferation fo histiocytes
- Varies in presentation but only in young (<30) patients
- Vertebra plana
- Geographic lytic lesion without sclerotic boarder, no matrix
- Skull lesions with beveled edge (uneven osteolysys of inner and outer tables)
- Localized versus systemic disease has varying prognosis
